Information about the charity trustees and procedures

We are regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), but we would like to provide information here which may not be available on the OSCR website.

Transport

Due to excessive running costs, we no longer own our own van. We will hire a van, when necessary, to allow us to accept, and deliver, larger items, such as fridges and furniture. Smaller items will be transported using a private car. The van shown in the photo on the videos page, which we used to own, is now being pictured for illustration purposes. We are happy to accept donations of smaller items handed in to us at the shop, such as clothes, shoes, ornaments, jewellery and toys. You can phone the shop on 0141 550 0568.

Charity history

The charity was formed on 2nd April 2002, when the christian charity Romania Mercy Mission amalgamated with the charity People in Need. The office bearers at that time consisted of Richard Lytton and Arthur Clark, formerly of Romania Mercy Mission, and Liz Dick, formerly of People in Need. Phil Green, formerly of People in Need, decided to cease involvement in charitable works, for personal reasons. At a meeting on 28th April 2004, Inland Revenue charities accepted our revised constitution which makes provision for assisting in countries other than Romania, and changes the name from People in Need Romania Mercy Mission to People in Need.
On 9th May 02, it was agreed, at a meeting of the office bearers, that we would no longer seek to take supplies of humanitarian aid to Romania. Instead, money will be sent or taken, to buy goods in the country, or fund charitable works in the country. It was felt that this change was necessary to ensure that charity funds would be used to greater effect. We were concerned about the costs of individual journeys, as we were only able to afford to make 1 or 2 trips per year. These high costs, as experienced in the run up to the trip we made during September 2001, arose from items such as vehicle purchase, repairs, insurance and fuel. No payments were made to drivers or passengers, and this continues to be our policy regarding anyone who makes a trip to Eastern Europe, representing our charity.
Whilst it could reasonably have been expected that we would take a similar stance on the issue of delivering goods to Moldova, it was agreed in principal that it could make sense to drive to Moldova, using a vehicle owned by a charity trustee, taking second hand clothes, at a charity meeting during December 2015. This opinion has resulted from conversations with Igor in Beltsy, Moldova, when he commented on what it would cost them to buy such clothes there, and our subsequent calculation that we could deliver clothes there cheaper than people in Moldova could buy them there. We remain commited to seeking out the best value options when considering how we might spend charity money.

Could you offer help?

We are keen to learn about any opportunities that may exist for claiming grants from trusts, etc.

On behalf of people in Romania, Moldova and Scotland – Thankyou

Revised constitution

During October 2007, we revised our constitution, which was subsequently accepted by OSCR, the new charity regulator, and the successor to inland revenue charities. The main change was the removal from the objects clause of the intention to preach the gospel.
